Congressman Higgins Selected to Serve on House Ways & Means Committee

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) has announced that in the 116th Congress he’s been selected to continue serving on the exclusive Ways & Means Committee. This term will be Higgins’ third on the committee.

Founded in 1789, the House Ways & Means Committee is the oldest committee in Congress, and one of the most powerful. The Committee has jurisdiction over taxation, tariffs, Medicare, the Affordable Care Act, Social Security, trade, and more. As such, it’s a key committee on issues of economic development, healthcare reform, and federal revenue programs.

Congressman Higgins has been assigned to the subcommittees on Trade, Health, and Social Security. Higgins has previously served the Trade and Health subcommittees; this will be his first full Congress on the Social Security panel.  On those subcommittees, he’ll work to promote fair trade policies that protect Western New Yorkers, to advance his previously introduced healthcare legislation to expand Medicare to millions more Americans by allowing those over 50 to buy-in early, and advance legislation to improve access and reduce backlogs in the Social Security Administration.

Higgins said: “It’s an honor to continue serving on one of the most powerful and historic committees in the House. I look forward to furthering our work on bringing down healthcare costs, improving our system of international trade, and making sure that Social Security delivers on its promise to hardworking Americans who have spent their lives paying into the program.”

Due to his new Social Security Subcommittee assignment, Congressman Higgins will no longer serve on the Budget Committee. Committee assignments are reviewed by the full Caucus and expected to be confirmed within the next couple weeks.
