Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra presents special benefit concert for Ukraine

In the spirit of healing, honoring lives lost, and providing hope to those affected by the conflict in Ukraine, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will present Slava Ukraini: A Benefit Concert for Ukraine on Sunday, April 3, 7:00 p.m. at Kleinhans Music Hall. This special performance, conducted by Maestro JoAnn Falletta, will feature the full orchestra performing music that allows for moments of quiet reflection and celebrates resiliency of spirit, including Melody by Myroslav Skoryk, which has become the unofficial theme for the Ukrainian conflict, as well as Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, Chopin’s Valse No. 2 from Les Sylphides Suite, and Sibelius’ Finlandia, all resounding anthems of trial and triumph. In addition, the performance will feature BPO musicians in solo works with the orchestra, including Associate Principal Cellist Feng Hew on Fauré’s Elégie for Cello and Orchestra; flutist Natalie Debikey Scanio on “Àmhran” from Christopher Rouse’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra; and Associate Concertmaster Amy Glidden, who performs the moving violin solo from John Williams’ Theme from Schindler’s List. The Buffalo GirlChoir will perform pre-concert in the Mary Seaton Room, and will join the orchestra to sing the Ukrainian National Anthem.
“Our BPO musicians and our entire Buffalo community are devastated by the suffering caused by the war in Ukraine,” said Maestro JoAnn Falletta. “We want to join together with our audience to raise funds to help the refugees and to unite our hearts with music in this special concert.”
Tickets to Slava Ukraini are general admission and select-your-own-price, with a suggested ask of $40 per person. All proceeds from ticket sales will help the global Red Cross movement provide humanitarian relief in response to the Ukraine crisis. To purchase tickets or to make a donation, call (716)885-5000, visit bpo.org, or stop by the Kleinhans Box Office between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
