Austrian man who held his daughter captive for 24 years seeks release

(NewsNation) — Josef Fritzl, an Austrian man imprisoned for holding his own daughter captive and raping her, is asking to be released from prison and move to a nursing home.

Fritzl, 88, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2009 and has been held in a high-security unit for mentally disturbed prisoners. Under Austrian law, he was eligible for conditional release in 2023.

His lawyer, Astrid Wagner, is asking the court to release him to a care home. Fritzl has dementia and a court psychologist said in a report he was no longer dangerous and had become physically frail and now requires a walker to move about.

Fritzl’s case has been described as one of the worst in Austrian history. In 1984, he lured his daughter Elisabeth, who had just turned 18, to the basement and trapped her in a hidden prison cell he had secretly constructed. He had already been sexually abusing her for many years, beginning when she was 11.

Elisabeth had previously run away from home and Josef Fritzl convinced his wife and police that she had done so again and joined a cult. He would keep her in the prison cell for 24 years, raping her and forcing her to bear seven children with him.

One of the children died shortly after birth. Josef took three of the other children upstairs to live with him and his wife, reporting to social services and his wife that Elisabeth had dropped the children on the doorstep before returning to the cult.

The remaining three children were kept in the basement cell with Elisabeth. In 2008, one of those children, Kerstin, fell ill and Elisabeth persuaded Josef to take her to the hospital. She eventually convinced him to allow her to visit Kerstin and police, acting on suspicions from those at the hospital, took both her and Josef in for questioning. That’s when the whole story was revealed.

Fritzl pleaded guilty to rape, false imprisonment, manslaughter by negligence and incest. Fritzl was also suspected in the death of three sex workers, but there was not enough evidence to connect him to the case.

Elisabeth and her children were given new identities due to the intense coverage of the case and required significant therapy to recover and reunite the children held captive with those raised by Josef and his wife.

In 2022, the courts blocked an effort to move Fritzl from the high-security jail to a normal prison, citing untreatable psychiatric conditions.

Ex-GOP insider claims party rotting from the inside out: ‘We rewarded compliance!’

The Republican Party's takeover by the MAGA movement was decades in the making, former GOP strategist Stuart Stephens told MS NOW on Thursday, and the decisions that led to it have left the party with elected leaders who are incapable of taking a stand for themselves or the country as a whole.

This comes as the president made repeated threats to wipe Iran off the face of the earth — and though he hasn't followed through on it for the time being, only a small smattering of Republicans went out of their way to condemn his genocidal rhetoric.

"Stuart, I'll start with you," said anchor Antonia Hylton. "Republicans have repeatedly made this claim since the start of this administration that they have a mandate. I want to know how they can continue to make that case right now, as the president just keeps doubling down on the very things his voters said they did not want."

"Yeah. You know, that's a really great question," said Stevens. "I don't think we had a mandate to have gas prices go through the roof, or mandate to threaten to destroy an entire country, civilization, the Persian Empire. I don't think we had a mandate to keep hiding Epstein files."

"Look, I think what's happened here is something that we did inside the Republican Party, and we didn't realize it. At least I didn't realize it was happening when I was working in the party," said Stevens. "And that as we evolved a system that rewarded compliance, that you got ahead by going along and we punish those that were more individual, who spoke out, who were willing to break with the party. And if you do that decade after decade, I think it's like a genetic experiment. You end up with this extraordinary, highly compliant, weak group of senators and congressmen."

Years ago, he said, "had you said to them that Donald Trump is going to threaten to annihilate another civilization, they would have laughed and said, of course that's never going to happen. But now it's happening or us, the way that we're supporting Russia in this war. We have the vice president over there supporting Putin's candidate in Hungary, and 90 percent of Republicans are against this, but they won't say anything. And I think it's just a collapse of a party unlike anything that we've seen in modern political history."

Conservative Supreme Court Justices could face impeachment as Dems plan next move

Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner, running against Republican Susan Collins in Maine, called for Democrats to exercise ethics oversight of the Supreme Court and pursue impeachment of justices if they retake the Senate.

Platner argued in front of a crowed, if Supreme Court justices faced the same ethical standards as lower court judges, "there is a compelling case for the impeachment and removal of at least two," likely referencing Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

According to a ProPublica report, Thomas accepted undisclosed luxury gifts from GOP megadonor Harlan Crow, while Alito took luxury trips with hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer tied to entities opposing Biden's student loan forgiveness. Alito also faced scrutiny over a Christian nationalism flag displayed at his residence.

Platner additionally supports expanding the Court's size with a simple majority vote if Democrats control the White House and Senate, arguing Democrats must elect senators willing to "wield power" effectively.

Democrats are projected to retake the House of Representatives and have gained popularity in the Senate, where Platner's win could impact the Supreme Court.

White House blindsided after Melania Trump speaks about partying with Jeffrey Epstein

White House officials were reportedly blindsided after first lady Melania Trump gave a surprise address in which she admitted partying with two of the country's most infamous sex offenders, Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

During an address at the White House, Trump decried the "lies" linking her to Epstein and Maxwell.

"I reject their mean-spirited attempts to defame my reputation. I've never been friends with Epstein. Donald and I were invited to the same parties, as Epstein from time to time, since overlapping in social circles is common in New York City and Palm Beach," the first lady said. "To be clear, I never had a relationship with Epstein or his accomplice, Maxwell. My email reply to Maxwell cannot be characterized as anything more than casual correspondence."

"I'm not a witness or a named witness in connection with any of Epstein's crimes. My name has never appeared in court documents, the depositions, victim statements, or FBI in interviews surrounding the Epstein matter. I have never had any knowledge of Epstein's abuse of his victims. I was never involved in any capacity. I was not a participant, was never on Epstein's plane, and never visited his private island. I have never been legally accused or convicted of a crime in connection with Epstein sex trafficking, abuse of minors, and other repulsive behavior," she insisted.

Trump, however, did not spend as much time defending her husband.

"Now is the time for Congress to act. Epstein was not alone," she said. "Several prominent male executives resigned from their powerful positions after this matter became widely politicized. Of course, this doesn't amount to guilt, but we still must work openly and transparently to uncover the truth."

Following the speech, MS NOW's Jake Taylor reported that White House officials "were caught off guard by her statement."
