Trump to target critical race theory, promote school choice

WASHINGTON (NewsNation) — President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order Wednesday that would defund K-12 schools that teach radical gender ideology or critical race theory (CRT), according to White House documents obtained by NewsNation.

According to the documents, the goal is to shift focus back to “excellence and patriotism,” preparing students to become “patriotic citizens ready for the workforce, not political activists.”

The order mandates that within 90 days, the secretary of education must present a strategy to eliminate CRT and radical gender ideology in school lessons, the documents said.

Additionally, the executive order will reinstate the 1776 Commission, created by Trump in 2020 to promote understanding of U.S. history and its founding principles. Former President Joe Biden ended the commission within his first 100 days in office.

The order also directs the U.S. attorney general to work with state attorneys general and local district attorneys to pursue action against teachers and school officials involved in sexual exploitation of minors or practicing “social transition” without a license.

Trump is also expected to sign an executive order empowering parents and students through school choice.

“The school choice executive order comes as new data shows our school system is failing,” a senior White House official told NewsNation.

The order emphasizes parental authority in directing children’s education and “not the government.” It also instructs the Department of Education to provide guidance on using federal funds to support state-based K-12 scholarship programs, helping students attend schools that best meet their needs.
