Millions in US under winter storm alerts

(NewsNation) — Large areas of the nation are digging out after a strong storm brought snow to parts of the Upper Great Lakes and the Northeast, with more in store across the country.

The storm started off in the Midwest, producing a swath of snow across Minnesota and the Great Lakes region. It then moved — strengthening along the way — to upstate New York and New England, which saw up to a foot of snow in some parts.

Midwest

St. Louis will see multiple snow systems this week, resulting in minor travel impacts.

Kansas City will see chances for snow multiple days this week, with up to 12 inches of snow possible in some areas, if all weather events play out NewsNation’s local affiliate forecasts.

Snow emergencies were declared in Minneapolis ahead of the storm, and parts of the Dakotas saw new single-day snow total records.

Northeast

The snow snarled air traffic across the Northwest on Sunday with Boston Logan International Airport reporting 100 cancellations early Sunday morning.

All New York-area airports report delays as well, though the number of issues has decreased Sunday afternoon.

Forecasters predict three more possible winter storms in the New York and New Jersey area come next week.

“One good thing with this storm, it is moving pretty quickly, so it’s not gonna be a prolonged winter weather event,” said Bob Oravec, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland. “It looks like the snow will definitely be coming to an end earlier in the day on Sunday, after which the weather will be fairly tranquil for a few days.”
