DOGE subcommittee looks at US foreign aid spending

WASHINGTON (NewsNation) — The House subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency is meeting Wednesday to examine U.S. foreign aid spending.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., chairwoman of the subcommittee, said the hearing comes as Americans are “shocked” to discover how their taxpayer dollars have been spent overseas.

The hearing follows the Department of Government Efficiency’s downsizing of the U.S. Agency for International Development as the Trump administration works to dismantle the agency that oversees foreign aid and development programs.

Greene opened the hearing about how USAID has been “weaponized” to undercut U.S. interests overseas.

“The Democrat-run USAID should not get to use our federal government, our US taxpayer dollars as their party piggy bank to push their radical agenda in countries that we have no business giving money to,” Greene said in her opening statements, adding that 96% of USAID employee political contributions go to democratic party candidates or PACs.

Additionally, she exposed what she described as the “dark truth” about USAID’s mission.

“USAID has been transformed into an America-last foreign aid slush fund to prop up extremist groups, implement censorship campaigns and interfere in foreign elections to force regime change around the world,” she said. That is the dark truth about USAID. That is the story the American people need to know.

Ranking Member Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., opened her remarks by welcoming the committee to “the Elong Musk chainsaw massacre.”

“This remake of a classic is terrible because it’s hurting real people and its lead character, Mr. Musk, hasn’t shown up in front of this committee or Congress at all,” she continued.

Democrats are questioning three witnesses, including Max Primorac, a Heritage Foundation research fellow who formerly served as USAID’s chief operating officer and is expected to argue that foreign aid organizations have weakened the U.S. influence.

“What I will do is show how the woke agenda harmed the American brand name. It made us synonymous with values that are rejected by most of the world,” Primorac told the Daily Signal.

Democrats defend aid amid USAID cuts

USAID is likely to be a major topic at the hearing. The agency has laid off thousands of workers and cut programs worldwide as the Trump administration continues its efforts to crack down on government spending.

A source shared a message with NewsNation that was sent to employees warning them to pack up in 15 minutes and to not bring any weapons.

USAID has seen its Washington, D.C., headquarters shuttered over the last month as thousands of its programs have collapsed worldwide.

While Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have criticized USAID for wasteful spending and pushing a liberal agenda, Democrats argue agencies like USAID play a critical role in maintaining U.S. influence abroad.

“We got the best military in the world, but we also have diplomacy, and we also have our international allies, our friends,” said Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas. “But also, one big tool that the U.S. has is soft power. That is, being able to provide assistance to countries … it’s in our best interest.”

DOGE staffers resign over cuts

Amid the turmoil at DOGE, 21 staffers resigned Tuesday in protest of the widespread cuts the agency is spearheading, refusing to comply with the downsizing effort.

The employees, formerly with the U.S. Digital Services department, wrote in a letter, “We will not use our skills as technologists to compromise core government systems, jeopardize Americans’ sensitive data, or dismantle critical public services,” as first reported by the Associated Press.

In response, Musk labeled the staffers as “political holdovers” and claimed they would have been fired if they had not resigned.

Federal workers ‘do not deserve’ a paycheck: Marjorie Taylor Greene

Greene has recently come under fire for saying federal workers “do not deserve” their paychecks.

“Those jobs are paid for by the American tax people who work real jobs, earn real income, pay federal taxes, and then pay these federal employees. Federal employees do not deserve their jobs. Federal employees do not deserve their paychecks,” she said Tuesday during a House committee meeting.

Greene earns $174,000 annually as a member of Congress.

Amy Gleason named interim DOGE chief

Meanwhile, questions remain about the leadership of DOGE.

The White House confirmed that Amy Gleason, a former U.S. Digital Services official, is the interim administrator of the agency.

A recent court filing indicated that Musk is not in charge but serves as a senior advisor to the president.

‘Never felt more betrayed’: MAGA rebels over Trump’s ‘treasonous’ Qatar base in Idaho

After years of advocating "America First," President Donald Trump's administration, the Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced on Friday, "I'm also proud that today we're signing a letter of acceptance to build a Qatari Emiri Air Force facility at the Mountain Home Airbase in Idaho."

It led to a swift meltdown from some of the president's top allies.

Constitutionalist and MAGA influencer "The General" was furious, calling it outright "treason."

"We are in the middle of rolling out military across the entire USA and then bringing in a non-NATO country military into the USA is TREASON. U.S. and Qatar sign deal to open a Qatari 'air force facility,' in the U.S., at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho," he wrote on X.

"Is this what 'shared defense goals' means now — or just the latest way our politicians get paid to sell out our country?" asked Amy Mek, the editor-in-chief of RAIR, an organization that advocates for the U.S. to return to a country run by Judeo-Christian values. "Twenty-four years after foreign nationals trained in our flight schools flew planes into our buildings, our leaders are inviting their financiers to train inside our bases. This is what happens when you gut national-security training, scrub every mention of Islam, jihad, and Sharia from the manuals, and let Obama- and Biden-era bureaucrats turn counterterrorism into cultural sensitivity class. We’re being led by officials who no longer recognize or refuse to name the enemy they’re inviting into our own backyard.'

Close ally to President Trump, Laura Loomer, lamented the news after advocating that the administration declare the Muslim Brotherhood an international terrorist organization.

"Well, I guess this isn’t going to happen since we just gave the Muslim Brotherhood an air base in Idaho. So much for my decade worth of hard work trying to protect Americans from the threat of Islamic terror," said Loomer about the new base.

"No foreign country should have a military base on U.S. soil," she also said. "Especially Islamic countries. I have never felt more betrayed by the GOP than I do now watching Islamic jihadists get away with implementing Sharia law in the US and now they are getting their own airbase where they will train to kill Americans."

She went on to warn that it would make America less safe by setting up "for America to be attacked by Islamic savages from Qatar, the biggest funders of Islamic terror in the entire world. So much so, the Saudis and Emiratis find Qatar to be TOXIC. I need to see how much more of my life I am going to dedicate to a party that won’t address the threat of Islam in the West. The betrayal stings. WE ARE LOSING OUR COUNTRY!"

Content creator and influencer Red Eagle Politics denied the reporting.

"We aren’t giving Argentina a free $20 Billion handout, and we aren’t building an Air Force Base for Qatar in Idaho. The amount of dishonest lunacy on this app is reaching new heights," he wrote on X.

Utah state Sen. Nate Blouin, a Democrat, pointed out that Idaho Republicans "have been crowing about" legislation similar to that his state enacted "blocking foreign ownership of land in their state."

Dan Caldwell, former senior advisor to Hegseth, wrote on X that it wasn't that big of a deal.

"The freak out around this is of course totally unwarranted since this is actually a pretty common practice with countries that buy and operate a lot of U.S. military aircraft. Singapore has a similar facility and detachment for its F-15 training unit at this very same airbase," he said.

Caldwell is one of the DOD aides who was forced out amid Hegseth's Signalgate scandal. He has denied any wrongdoing.
