(NewsNation) — A gunman armed with an assault-style rifle killed four people Monday in a Manhattan high-rise building that houses the NFL headquarters and several financial firms before turning the gun on himself, according to authorities.
Authorities said 27-year-old Shane Tamura, of Nevada, was believed to have acted alone in the shooting. An official motive has not yet been released.
Here are the victims of the shooting and what we know about them:
Didarul Islam
Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was a veteran of the New York Police Department for more than three years. Authorities said he was off-duty and working as a private security detail when the shooting occurred, according to NewsNation affiliate WPIX.
“He put himself in harm’s way. He paid the ultimate sacrifice,” New York City police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. “Shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to this city. He died as he lived, a hero.”
Didarul was an immigrant from Bangladesh who was said to love New York City. Tisch said he leaves behind a wife and two young sons, and was expecting a third child.
“My heart is with his loved ones, his NYPD family and every victim of this tragedy,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.
Wesley LePatner
Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner was identified as another victim of Monday’s shooting by a spokesperson with the company.
According to Blackstone’s website, LePatner was the Global Head of Core+ Real Estate and the Chief Executive Officer of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust. She had been with the investment company since 2014.
“Words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond.”
The statement added that LePatner leaves behind her husband and two children.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of two other victims killed in the shooting.
