Watch live from outside the US Capitol as police respond to unconfirmed reports of an active shooter on Wednesday 2 August. Officers were dispatched to canvass Senate office buildings in response to what police described as “a concerning 911 call”. In a post on X (the social media website formerly known as Twitter), the US Capitol Police department advised that people should stay away from the area as officers are still investigating. “Our officers are searching in and around the Senate Office Buildings in response to a concerning 911 call. Please stay away from the area,” the post read. A subsequent post from Capitol Police said that there have been no confirmed reports of gunshots. “If you are inside the Senate Buildings, everyone inside should be sheltering in place as the report was for a possible active shooter. Monday marked the end of July with a surprising weather event near Hamburg and Orchard Park, as a funnel cloud was spotted. Fortunately, there were no reports of it touching down into the lake or on land. The National Weather Service issued special marine warnings for Erie and Chautauqua counties until late afternoon. Another funnel cloud appeared around 2:30 p.m., and reports of waterspouts near Wanakah were noted, moving at about 11.5 miles per hour. While the end of July saw scorching temperatures of 90 degrees in Western New York with noticeable humidity, the upcoming week is expected to bring cooler mid-70s weather with possible rain and thunderstorms. Despite Buffalo's reputation for moderate weather, a peculiar weather phenomenon was spotted in Hamburg. Though close to Lake Erie, the formation of the clouds resembled a tornado, raising concerns among locals. However, meteorologists from the National Weather Service determined it to be a "landspout," similar to a "waterspout." Reassuringly, they clarified that a landspout forms through a distinct process from a typical tornado, and both landspouts and waterspouts are generally not dangerous.
