DEFENDANT TO SERVE THE MAXIMUM PRISON SENTENCE FOR SETTING HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND ON FIRE

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 29-year-old Jonathon E. White of City of Tonawanda has been sentenced by Supreme Court Justice Mark A. Montour to 25 years in prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.

On December 17, 2018, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the defendant lured his former girlfriend to a secluded area outside of a Tim Hortons restaurant on Niagara Street in the City of Tonawanda. The defendant doused the victim with gasoline and set her on fire.

The victim suffered extensive burns to her face, head, and hands. She was hospitalized at ECMC in the Burn Unit for four months where she underwent a dozen surgeries. She continues to receive treatment for her extensive injuries.

A jury found White guilty, as charged, of one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and one count of Assault in the First Degree, both Class “B” violent felonies. The jury rendered their verdict after 5 hours of deliberations following a one-week jury trial in October 2019.

In addition to the sentence, Justice Montour issued a no-contact order of protection on behalf of the victim and her three children that will remain in effect until December 2051.

“This was one of the most cruel and unthinkable crimes that has ever been prosecuted by my office,” said Erie County District Attorney John Flynn. “The defendant’s actions were indisputable and I commend the victim for having the courage to testify against him in court. I hope she feels that justice has been served by this defendant being convicted on all counts and sentenced to the maximum term of imprisonment.”

DA Flynn commends the City of Tonawanda Police and Fire Departments for their rapid response to the attack and for preserving critical evidence at the scene as well as the Erie County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation Unit for their assistance in the investigation.

The was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Schnirel of the DA’s Domestic Violence Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Ryan Haggerty of the DA’s Tactical Prosecution Unit.

Fox News taken aback by ‘rattled’ Kristi Noem’s remarks after ouster: ‘That was weird’

Fox News host John Roberts described Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as "rattled" moments after President Donald Trump fired her.

Roberts' network broadcast remarks by Noem as news broke that she would be replaced by Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK).

"That was weird with Kristi Noem, or what?" Roberts observed. "I mean, I assume that she knew. And if she did, that was really demonstrating the art of compartmentalization because she was there before the Sergeants Benevolent Association of New York in Nashville at a conference, giving a speech at the major city's conference."

"And to me, she seemed a little rattled," he continued, "because she usually doesn't make any mistakes when she delivers a speech. And she was making a few there."

As Noem was speaking, Fox News cut to live video of Mullin on the phone as he entered an elevator at the U.S. Capitol.

"I'll be back," Mullin insisted.

"So here's what I'm wondering," Roberts remarked. "Was he really on the phone, or was he pretending to be on the phone? Because, I mean, I've done that a couple of times that there's somebody that I don't want to talk to who sort of comes up to you on the street. You grab your phone, and you pretend you're on a call."

Mullin never returned to the cameras.
