Democrats unanimously endorse Mark Poloncarz

Erie County Democrats tonight unanimously endorsed Mark C. Poloncarz for another term as county executive.

“No county executive has ever earned reelection more than Mark Poloncarz,” said ECDC Chair Jeremy J. Zellner. “For the first time in 50 years, Erie County is growing and entering a new era of prosperity under Mark’s leadership.

“While guiding us through the worst public health crisis in a century, he has lowered property taxes, raised the county’s financial rating to its highest in more than a decade, kept the Bills in Buffalo, devoted record resources to new roads and infrastructure, and, most of all, upheld the values of fairness, compassion, and equality that define us as Democrats.

“I am always proud to call Mark Poloncarz my friend, and never prouder to stand with him as he seeks four more years as our Erie County Executive.”

“It has been a privilege to serve the people of Erie County as their Executive, and together we have overcome adversity, found common ground, and laid the foundations for a better future,” Poloncarz said.

“Our resilient Erie County is gaining population and new business, even as we have kept taxes low, broken ground on projects that languished for decades, and fought to ensure that children, working families, and older adults are supported in our community.

“These are bedrock Democratic principles, and earning the endorsement of the Democratic Party underscores my commitment to building a better Erie County for all, for today and as a lasting legacy.

“Our best is yet to come, and I thank the Erie County Democratic Committee, and everyone interested in a better future for county residents, for their support.”

Poloncarz was first elected in 2011 after winning the county comptroller’s office in 2005 and 2009.

Red state GOP moves to throw out votes already cast without telling voters: report

Alabama GOP lawmakers moved to toss out votes already cast for its May 19 primary amid a gerrymandering push without notifying voters of the changes.

According to reporting on Tuesday by Democracy Docket, the Alabama lawmakers began taking votes on Tuesday to change the congressional and state senate maps as a primary election is underway. The legislation in front of state lawmakers would allow the state to nullify votes already cast in some of the congressional races and later hold special elections under the new maps, the Democracy Docket reported.

Alabama lawmakers have also shot down efforts to let voters know about the changes. Democratic State Sen. Vivian Davis Figures lost an effort to pass an amendment to notify Alabama voters about the changes.

"Thank you to all of my colleagues for showing me once again who you are," she said, according to Democracy Docket.

Republican state Rep. Chris Pringle, the sponsor of a congressional redistricting bill, declined to explain to Alabama voters why the Legislature is making these changes, telling his lawmakers, "I'm not an attorney," per Democracy Docket. Similarly, GOP state Sen. Chris Elliot, a sponsor for a state senate redistricting bill, was accused of confusing Alabama voters, Democracy Docket reported.

Abby Phillip brutally fact-checks MAGA pundit with devastating takedown

CNN's Abby Phillip brutally fact-checked a MAGA pundit during Monday's broadcast of her show "NewsNight" over the White House's claim that left-wing rhetoric inspired the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday.

Ben Ferguson, who co-hosts the "Verdict" podcast with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) joined the panel to discuss the shooting, and defended the White House's claim that Democrats inspired the shooter to attack the event. He pointed to recent statements from Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and language the shooter included in his alleged manifesto as evidence that the rhetoric inspired the attack.

Phillip fact-checked Ferguson's claims with a couple of clips putting the Democrats' statements into their full context, and highlighting how Trump has spoken of Democrats the same way he has accused them of speaking about him.

"The point is that it's not that Donald Trump is responsible for violence against those people. The point is that it's not enough to explain that the moment we are in is just, 'Did he call her a fascist? Did she call him a fascist?'" Phillip said. "Because that is happening on both sides of the debate. There is more that is contributing to where we are as a country, and it is bad. It is unquestionably bad. And if we fail to actually address the root causes, we are going nowhere."
