Becker Farms Community Outreach Initiatives Continue with Trunk or Treat on Sunday, October 30

Becker Farms, a 340 acre working fruit and vegetable farm, continues its community outreach with Trunk or Treat this Sunday, October 30th from 1-4 PM by offering a safe way for families to celebrate Halloween.  A $5 donation per person includes admission to the grounds, access to all kids’ activities including the playground, mega slide, corn maze, petting zoo, and more, plus live music at the farm.  All proceeds go back to the fire halls.

In partnership with Terry’s Corners Vol. Fire Company, Gasport Chemical Hose Company, and Hartland Vol. Company, fire trucks and ambulances will be on hand, decorated, and ready to give out Halloween treats. Contests will be held for Best Kids Costume, Best Adult Costume, and Best Trunk, with three winners for each category.  Prizes of all levels include specialty items from Becker Farms and Vizcarra Vineyards, and the first place Best Trunk wins a free wine party for 20 guests.

Other community outreach activities include the Becker Farms Booster Weekend, where booster groups used a special promo code and $5 of every ticket was donated back to that group; and Pie Fundraising, where groups can reach their fundraising goals by selling pies and fudge through Becker Farms.  So far, Becker Farms donated approximately $660 to 10 area nonprofits over the Labor Day weekend, and continues to welcome groups for fundraising opportunities.  The Pie Fundraising initiative works for both small and large organizations and is a simple process which includes choosing a delivery date, distributing order forms, submitting the order, and receiving the pies or fudge just in time for the holidays.  To learn more visit https://www.beckerfarms.com/fundraising-c1rkh or email bakery.beckerfarms@gmail.com.

Amanda Vizcarra, 5th generation family member and Hospitality Director, is proud to help local groups fundraise in a variety of ways.  “Becker Farms is part of the Gasport and surrounding area, and it is important that we give back to our community through events like the Booster Weekend, Pie Fundraiser initiative, and Trunk or Treat.  Our Trunk or Treat afternoon on October 30th is a great way for families to come out and celebrate Halloween safely together.”

‘Nightmare scenario’: Analysis warns Supreme Court may ‘clear path’ for one-party rule

A Democratic voting rights group was "sounding the alarm" Wednesday, warning of a "nightmare scenario" wherein the U.S. Supreme Court could "clear the path for a one-party system" and give Republicans control of Congress.

The high court is slated to rehear Louisiana v. Callais on Oct. 15, and in a new Politico report, Fair Fight Action and Black Voters Matter Fund signal that removing Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act could give Republicans a path to redraw up to 19 House seats to benefit their party.

The Voting Rights Act — the landmark Civil Rights-era legislation — has been targeted by Republicans, aiming to remove this particular section, Politico reports.

The move would "clear the path for a one-party system where power serves the powerful and silences the people,” Black Voters Matter Fund co-founder LaTosha Brown said in a statement.

The ruling could also ultimately remove 30% of Congressional Black Caucus seats and 11% of Congressional Hispanic Caucus seats, according to Salon.

This could leave limited options for Democrats.

"Democrats could also find ways to use any changes to the VRA to their benefit. The party could redraw maps in heavily-blue areas with VRA protections to try and expand their margins, but there will be fewer opportunities," Politico reports.

The law has been used to offer protections against racial gerrymandering in redistricting, a topic that's become a key move ahead of midterm elections amid President Donald Trump's push to maintain GOP control in Congress, putting pressure on Republicans to redraw district lines and saying "there could very well be consequences" if they don't take action.
