Additional public input is being requested before the NFTA‘s proposed route changes take effect. A hearing is set for next Tuesday (1/31) in Buffalo’s Common Council Chamber, with Authority representatives expected to be on hand. The NFTA plans to cut bus service by about 14 percent because of a multi-million dollar deficit.
Another section of Buffalo is set to get a makeover. One-point-three-five million dollars in city funding will create a new “streetscape” north of Martin Luther King (formerly Humboldt) Park. Fillmore Avenue will get new sidewalks, bike lanes, trees, benches, and lighting. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2013.
Meanwhile, the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency will demolish 57 vacant properties, mostly near schools and community centers across the city, at a price tag of one-million dollars. That funding comes from federal block-grant dollars.
The state transportation commissioner is walking back previous comments that Western New York was shortchanged in construction budgeting. Joan McDonald stated last year that the region missed out on 167-million dollars in road and bridge repair funding. This week she told the state’s Joint Legislative Budget Panel that no mistakes were made.
