U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is hoping the Department of Defense uses American-made steel from companies like Auburn’s Nucor Corporation to construct military vehicles.

Gillibrand called on the Defense Department to use American-made steel for military vehicles in a letter, saying it would help boost U.S. steel production and create jobs in New York.

She also requested a review of the current language on armor plate steel, which says that steel melted outside of the United States is “domestic.” Gillibrand is hoping to require armor steel plate be melted in the United States.
