New Cohorts to Serve In The Buffalo Community!

The Buffalo AmeriCorps program based at The Belle Center has been given a brand new year to serve the community. They received a grant totaling $677,542 from the NYS Commission on National and Community Service.

Mayor Byron Brown will be swearing-in the new 53 AmeriCorps members for a brand new year of service at 11:00 a.m. January 30, 2012 at The Belle Center located at 104 Maryland Street Buffalo, NY.  A “Future Leaders” service project will follow the ceremony. AmeriCorps members will proceed into the Early Childhood Wing of The Belle Center and read their favorite books and work on a “When I Grow Up Exercise” with the students. This will allow the Early Childhood students to begin thinking about education in greater depth as they work with a Corps member to identify a career goal for their future and artistically design a personalized book with the steps needed to reach their goal.

Throughout the year Corps members will be a part of the Mayor’s Impact Team; working to beautify the City of Buffalo by working in Clean Sweeps, removing graffiti, shoveling snow for senior and disabled citizens, cleaning abandoned lots, and planting flowers and trees. “I wish to congratulate the newest members of the Buffalo AmeriCorps Program for making a vigorous but vital commitment to a year of service in the Buffalo community,” said Mayor Byron W. Brown.  “A few weeks ago, we remembered America’s great civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who stood for service.  Buffalo AmeriCorps members have always delivered on their promise to help and serve those in need, be it through my Mayor’s Impact Team, or tutoring youth.  I look forward to working with AmeriCorps’ newest members in the months to come.”

The AmeriCorps program has a major impact on the Buffalo community as it provides vital resources towards socio-economic advancement for members in the community through service. From its inception in 2007, the Buffalo AmeriCorps program hasawarded over $500,000 in education awards and over one million dollars in stipends. Members have tutored over 1,000 school-aged children in kindergarten through grade 12, eradicated over 26 miles of graffiti, shoveled snow for 500 senior and disabled citizens and have recruited over 30,000 volunteers to work in low income communities.

Pamela James, Buffalo AmeriCorps Program Director stated- “Having the opportunity to serve the Buffalo community is something that we count as a privilege. We are excited to partner with the Mayor’s Impact Team, and work in Clean Sweeps. We are also enthused about working on our predominate focus which is education- as we help to strengthen and build the capacity of academic programs throughout the City of Buffalo.”

Corps members will be embedded in fourteen community based organizations and local schools. Buffalo AmeriCorps is partnering with such organizations as Buffalo Promise Neighborhood (BPN) and the Westminster Charter School; Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority Perry Choice Neighborhoods (PCN) and University of Buffalo; Roswell Park and others.

*Buffalo AmeriCorps is its own entity based at The Belle Center and is separate from WNY AmeriCorps.

‘So naive, so stupid’: Former lawmaker raises alarm over Musk’s Social Security plans

Plans by the Donald Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), helmed by billionaire Elon Musk, to dismantle the Social Security Administration, were trashed by a former Democratic senator on Wednesday morning.

During an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," ex-Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said the staffers working DOGE, with an assist from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), hope to slash half the Social Security staffers.

That, she claimed, would not only backfire, but is a sign they have no idea what they are doing.

With "Morning Joe" regular Elise Jordan pointing out, "We were talking off camera about just how often you, when you were in office, you had to utilize the local social security offices to really get issues resolved by a caseworker who was local and in person. And I mean, just in terms of practicality, people who are on Social Security tend to be a little bit older. They aren't necessarily going to be as web savvy and immediately able to use the internet to solve whatever problem they have," McCaskill weighed in:

"I would like Elon Musk to sit down with a woman who is struggling with her benefits after her husband has died and trying to reconcile an error in the documents" the Missouri Democrat replied. "I would love him to sit down and talk to one of those people, instead of just assuming that tech can solve everything."

"It's so naive, it's so stupid," she bluntly stated.

Vance to visit southern border to highlight immigration crackdown

EAGLE PASS, Texas (NewsNation) — Vice President JD Vance...

US detains pro-Palestinian campus protest leader: union

A leader of protests at Columbia University against Israel's war in Gaza was arrested by immigration officers, a campus union said Sunday, after US President Donald Trump vowed to deport foreign pro-Palestinian student demonstrators.

Mahmoud Khalil, one of the most prominent faces in the campus's protest movement that erupted in response to Israel's conduct of the war, was arrested Saturday, the Student Workers of Columbia union said.

"On Saturday, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers detained Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian recent Columbia graduate and lead negotiator for last spring's Gaza solidarity encampment," the union said in a statement.

US campuses including Columbia's in New York were rocked by student protests against Israel's war in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack. The demonstrations ignited accusations of anti-Semitism.

Protests, some of which turned violent and saw campus buildings occupied and lectures disrupted, pitted students protesting Israel's conduct against pro-Israel campaigners, many of whom were Jewish.

Khalil, who remains in immigration enforcement detention, held permanent residency at the time of his arrest prompting thousands of people to sign a petition calling for his release, the union statement added.

"We are also aware of multiple reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents accessing or attempting to access Columbia campus buildings on Friday and Saturday, including undergraduate dorms," the union said.

Columbia did not directly address Khalil's arrest in response to inquiries, but in a statement said "there have been reports of ICE in the streets around campus."

"Columbia has and will continue to follow the law. Consistent with our longstanding practice and the practice of cities and institutions throughout the country, law enforcement must have a judicial warrant to enter non-public University areas, including University buildings," Columbia said.

The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment.

Trump railed against the student protest movement linked to the conflict in Gaza, and vowed to deport foreign students who had demonstrated.

He also threatened to cut off federal funding for institutions that he said were not doing enough to combat anti-Semitism.

His administration announced Friday it was cutting $400 million in federal grants to Columbia University, accusing it of failing to protect Jewish students from harassment.
