Amherst NY— They call themselves Backyard Broadway. They are a group of performing art students mostly from The Academy of Theatre Arts, in Williamsville who are making sure they use their talents to GIVE BACK. They aren’t looking for notoriety, they are just looking to help people out and inspire others to do the same. What ties these kids together, is not just their aspirations for being on Broadway – it’s their HUGE hearts.

Just two months ago, they held their first “large” event in Amherst. The held a benefit for 8yr old Andrew Masse from Derby NY. Andrew has brain cancer. Their event had a Chinese auction, 50/50 drawings, raffle items, etc. The highlight of the event, was the performance by the group. They entertained the crowd with what they do best—performing Broadway Musical Numbers.

DAYS after the event, another family asked the group if they would be willing to help a family friend, whose 17 year old daughter was afflicted with a brain tumor last year. (They wish to remain anonymous.) Although she is on the mend, their family still has mounting medical expenses. Backyard Broadway could NOT say no. So the planning began and the date was set! On August 31st, they will be at it again—holding a benefit to help raise money for this family. (Doors open at 6, performance at 7:30) While most kids their age are at Darien Lake, cooling off on water slides in the summer, these teenagers have spent most of it collecting items, organizing, collaborating, planning, choreographing, rehearsing, etc! After all—it is what this unique group likes doing the most—performing and helping others!

Make sure you stay tuned and start following this group! They already have TWO more benefits in the works as they team up with a charity very dear to their hearts—Variety Club—to help more children in need! Their next event is scheduled at The Woods at Bear Creek, just 10 minutes from Ellicottville. It will be held October 18th. For more details you can visit
