The Cheektowaga Democratic Committee announced Thursday that Town Councilmember Stephen Nowicki has resigned effective immediately amid questions about his residency, clearing the way for voters to choose his replacement in the November general election.
In a committee press release, Chairwoman Lynn Dearmyer said members agreed that unless Nowicki could commit to making his Cheektowaga home his primary residence he should step down. The committee said it urged Nowicki to decide prior to Aug. 3, which the release identified as the deadline for filling the vacancy for the Nov. 3, 2026 general election.
The committee is now accepting resumes from residents interested in appearing on the Nov. 3, 2026 general election ballot as a Town Council candidate for the remainder of the four-year term, which expires Dec. 31, 2027. According to the release, prospective candidates must be Cheektowaga residents and meet all legal requirements for office; the committee set a deadline of close of business on Monday, July 20, 2026 for submission of resumes and related materials.
The release thanked Nowicki for his service and said the resignation was “the right course of action as a matter of ethics” because it allows voters to choose a replacement.
