State awards nearly $42.6M in HECap grants; Rochester General College of Health Careers receives $5M

Governor Kathy Hochul announced nearly $42.6 million in Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program (HECap) awards to support 32 projects at independent colleges and universities across New York State. The funds will support campus renovations, critical infrastructure upgrades, new equipment and modern learning spaces intended to boost workforce training in health care, science, technology and education.

Among the institutions named in the state release, Rochester General College of Health Careers was awarded $5 million for renovations to its Innovation and Learning Center. The grant is part of a competitive program that matches state funds with institutional investments to modernize campuses and strengthen academic and research facilities.

The announcement highlighted selected awards that include:
– Fordham University: $5 million for renovations to the Quinn Library
– Columbia University Irving Medical Center: $5 million to replace a chiller system
– Rochester General College of Health Careers: $5 million for the Innovation and Learning Center renovations
– Barnard College: $3.3 million to replace HVAC systems in three residence halls
– Hobart & William Smith Colleges: $3 million for a new science building and adjacent renovations
– New York Medical College: $2.7 million across three sites
– Hamilton College: $2 million to renovate the Russell Sage Ice Rink
– New York Academy of Art: $1.65 million for HVAC and lighting upgrades
– Syracuse University: $1.5 million for window replacements at the Hall of Languages

The HECap Board approved the awards after a competitive review. The Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) administers the program and provides staff support to the board. Since HECap’s creation in 2005, New York State says it has awarded more than $404 million to support 341 projects statewide.

The state release framed the investments as measures to strengthen higher education’s role in workforce development and campus modernization.
