BUFFALO, NY – The nationally-ranked University at Buffalo men’s basketball team outscored Miami (OH) by 20 points in the second half, defeating the RedHawks, 88-64, in front of 6,177 fans at Alumni Arena. The crowd was the ninth largest in the current arena configuration. The win was the 19th straight at home for the Bulls as they improve to 15-1 on the year and 3-0 in league play.

Miami got out to a quick start on Saturday afternoon as the RedHawks led 11-3 just three minutes into the contest, but the Bulls were quick able to erase it with an 18-2 run and UB never looked back. The run was capped on a three-point play from freshman Jeenathan Williams, giving the Bulls a 22-13 lead with 11:24 left. Miami was able to tie the game back at 32-32, but the Bulls hit four straight free throws to take a 36-32 lead into the break.

UB opened the second half on a 7-0 run, including five straight points from senior Jeremy Harris to give Buffalo a 43-32 lead, but Miami again pulled it back with four at 44-40 with 14:28 remaining in regulation. From there, UB scored eight straight, including a three-point play from senior Nick Perkins to give the Bulls a 52-40 lead with 11:31 remaining.

With the Bulls leading by 10, UB then scored 11 straight, including a three pointer from sophomore Jayvon Graves, which put the Bulls ahead by 21 at 63-42 with 8:32 left. Another three-point play from Williams gave the Bulls their largest lead of the day at 71-45 with 6:05 left and UB never led by less than 21 for the remainder of the contest.

“I wasn’t happy with the way we started the game and I challenged our guys to go out there and perform for that great crowd and we did that in the second half,” said head coach Nate Oats. “I really thought Caruthers set the tone for us and the rest of the guys followed this afternoon.”

Harris led the Bulls with a team-high 17 points, one of five players in double figures for Buffalo. Senior Montell McRae had 19 points, while Perkins finished with 12 points at six rebounds.

Senior Dontay Caruthers had 11 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals. He went 7-of-8 from the free throw line as the Bulls hit a season high 25 free throws as a team.

Senior CJ Massinburg finished the night with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Graves added nine points, all coming on three triples. Junior Davonta Jordan had seven points and four dimes.

Williams had six points, while Brock Bertram added three. While not scoring, freshman Ronaldo Segu finished with a pair of assists and two rebounds.

The Bulls finished with a season-low four turnovers, their fewest in a game in over 20 years. Despite being outshot by Miami, UB was able to take 14 more shots and got to the free throw line 20 more times than the RedHawks.

Defensively, the Bulls forced Miami into 18 turnovers, which UB turned into 27 points. Buffalo also outrebounded Miami by one, 39-38.

Buffalo will look to build on its undefeated MAC start on Tuesday night at Western Michigan. Tipoff is at 7pm and the game will air on ESPN+.
