Gov. Cuomo and Democratic Conference to Senate Republicans: Where Do You Stand?

Gov. Cuomo and Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins in Joint Op-Ed: “Every New Yorker has a right to know where each member of the State Legislature stands when it comes to protecting a woman’s right to control her own reproductive health decisions.”

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and all 31 members of the Senate Democratic Conference led by Andrea Stewart-Cousins today called on Senate Republicans to return to Albany to vote to codify Roe v. Wade into State law and show New Yorkers where they stand. Following Governor Cuomo’s and Democratic Leader Stewart-Cousins’s joint Op-Ed calling for a vote, the unified Senate Democratic Conference has pledged to provide 31 votes and only need one Republican to vote to codify Roe v. Wade into State law.

The Senate Republicans have repeatedly blocked efforts to update New York’s nearly 50-year old abortion laws to ensure that women in New York maintain their rights under Roe v.Wade despite any potential action by the Supreme Court. The nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, creating a conservative majority on the Court, has heightened the risk of Roe v. Wade being overturned.

“Roe v. Wade is under attack in Washington and could be overturned. With 31 votes secured in the Senate, only 1 vote is needed to ensure that no matter what happens at the federal level, the protections offered by Roe v. Wade are secure in the State of New York. The Republicans in the State Senate owe it to their constituents to allow a vote and tell the people of this State where they stand when it comes to woman’s reproductive health rights,” Governor Cuomo said. “Senate Republicans, where do you stand?”

“New Yorkers overwhelmingly support women’s reproductive health care options and it is troubling that the Senate Republican Majority is so hostile to these rights that they won’t even agree to codify Roe v. Wade.” Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said. “With the extremism coming out of Washington, New Yorkers, especially women, deserve to have their reproductive health rights protected. It is time to end the misinformation and the rhetoric – they either support Roe v. Wade or they don’t.”

Senator Tim Kennedy said, “It is important that New York State guarantees the protections under Roe v. Wade no matter what happens in Washington. Women in this state deserve to have their reproductive health rights guaranteed. I am proud to stand up for women’s rights and health care protections, and I urge the Senate Republicans to codify the Roe v. Wade decision into State law immediately.”

‘Shut this down!’ MAGA explodes as Chicago explores slavery reparations

Supporters of President Donald Trump have flown into conniptions over Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s creation of a task force to study slavery reparations.

Johnson, a progressive mayor whose tenure has been marked with controversy, issued a news release announcing his decision this week, ahead of the observance of Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating when the final slaves held in Texas were notified of emancipation.

"This Task Force is an example of the Administration’s dedication to co-governance, and in partnership with members of the Aldermanic Black Caucus, the Mayor’s offices of Equity and Racial Justice and Business, Economic and Neighborhood Development, and other key City departments, will conduct a comprehensive study and examination of all policies that have harmed Black Chicagoans from the slavery era to present day and make a series of recommendations that will serve as appropriate remedies," said the mayor's news release.

His announcement enraged the MAGA sphere on X.

"JUST IN: Democrat Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is promoting a race-based government funding program in honor of Juneteenth. This is not legal," wrote far-right influencer Chaya "LibsOfTikTok" Raichik, tagging the Justice Department and Trump's civil rights chief Harmeet Dhillon.

"JUST IN: Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson just announced he will be handing race-based grants ONLY to blacks for 'slavery reparations,'" wrote far-right podcaster Nick Sortor. "This is straight up RACISM! Trump’s DOJ should shut this down NOW!"

"POS Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has announced he will be handing out race based grants to Blacks for reparations," wrote influencer "Gunther Eagleman." "This is blatant racism."

"The Juneteenth flag was unfurled today in Chicago, and @ChicagosMayor's racism was on full display," wrote "Chicago Contrarian." "Reparations and slavery featured prominently in his address. Johnson announced a $4M grant, based on race only, to blacks as a form of reparations. Johnson is a disgrace."

Arrest made in ‘road rage incident’ against GOP lawmaker Max Miller

Police have arrested a 36-year-old man in what they're calling a "road rage incident" involving Ohio Rep. Max Miller (R), according to WKYC-TV.

The suspect was identified as Feras Hamdan of Westlake, Ohio. The charge is a misdemeanor count of aggravated menacing.

"In details released Friday morning...Hamdan voluntarily turned himself in with counsel. An arrest warrant had been issued after Miller signed a criminal complaint for aggravated menacing and motion for a protection order," the news station reported.

A press release from the Rocky River Police Department stated, "Congressman Miller reported he was driving on Interstate 90 when the suspect threatened him and his family along with making antisemitic slurs. The suspect's vehicle left the area prior to the arrival of responding officers."

Miller released a statement on the incident, writing, "I will continue to fight against antisemitism, Islamophobia and all other forms of hate. You have an issue, take it to our office. You want to run me off the road, that’s a different story. We know who you are young man, and the police are going to be paying you a visit -- and I hope what you did this morning is worth it to you and anyone else who plans on doing this to anybody within our district, state or country."
