National Heritage Act, Supported by Higgins, Signed Into Law

On Thursday, January 5, President Biden signed the National Heritage Act (S. 1942) into law.  The legislation, advanced with the support of Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26), provides a long-term commitment to federal investments in Western New York Heritage Areas, which include the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor

“Western New York’s rich history and unique story are elevated through the work of National Heritage Areas, driving tourism and economic opportunities for the region,” said Congressman Higgins. “This law protects the strength of Heritage Areas for years to come.”

Higgins, a co-sponsor of the House bill, announced House approval of the legislation on December 22, 2022. Western New York is home to two of the 54 National Heritage Areas, established by Congress. Federal resources provided to National Heritage Areas help to leverage additional funding that drives projects preserving, enhancing, and highlighting the country’s national treasures.  One local example is the Discover Niagara Shuttle developed under the leadership of the Niagara Falls National Heritage Corridor.  The law unifies and extends support for National Heritage areas through 2037.
