Steve Meyer’s campaign says its July filing with the New York State Board of Elections shows the challenger has a significant cash-on-hand lead over incumbent Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns.
In a campaign press release dated July 17, 2026, Meyer’s team reported $113,642.79 in cash on hand compared with $69,838.17 for Kearns — a difference of nearly $44,000. The release said Meyer also outraised Kearns in individual contributions during the reporting period.
Challenger cites office scandals as factor
Meyer, an elected village trustee in Williamsville, used the fundraising numbers to argue voters want new leadership for the Clerk’s office. The release cites two scandals in the Clerk’s Office under Kearns’s watch — a deputy clerk who was sentenced after stealing more than $320,000 and another former employee who pleaded guilty to approving a pistol permit for someone barred from owning guns — and attributes concern among donors to those incidents.
The Meyer campaign said it will use the reported financial advantage to expand voter outreach and organize countywide as the campaign continues.
