Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announces that 62-year-old Jeffrey Calhoun of Lockport has been arraigned before Buffalo City Court Judge Amy C. Martoche on one count of Attempted Robbery in the First Degree, a Class “C” violent felony, one count of Menacing in the Second Degree, a Class “A” misdemeanor, and one count of Harassment in the Second Degree, a violation.
It is alleged that on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at approximately 11:25 a.m., the defendant attempted to forcibly steal a purse from a female victim and placed the victim in fear of physical injury by displaying a handgun. The defendant is also accused of grabbing the victim, biting her left arm, and throwing her to the ground. The incident allegedly occurred on Sanders Road and Colvin Avenue in the City of Buffalo following a traffic incident involving the victim and defendant.
Calhoun is scheduled to return on Monday for a felony hearing. He remains held on $75,000 cash or property.
The Buffalo Civil Rights Initiative alleges that Calhoun assumed the woman was not a U.S. citizen. A press release states that she is an African-American, a Muslim, and a Buffalo resident.
Judge Martoche issued a no-contact order of protection on behalf of the victim.
Calhoun faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.
