New York — U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s office on Tuesday released a statement endorsing Gov. Kathy Hochul’s executive order to impose a one-year moratorium on construction of hyperscale data centers while state agencies complete environmental and infrastructure reviews.
In the statement dated July 14, 2026, Gillibrand said she supports the pause and emphasized the need for stronger protections for communities, citing concerns about energy costs, water resources and air quality. “I applaud Governor Hochul for taking decisive action on data center construction,” the senator’s office quoted Gillibrand as saying.
Gillibrand also linked the state action to federal work she says is needed to ensure artificial intelligence benefits all Americans and to protect consumers, seniors and workers from harms tied to AI and related technologies.
The senator’s statement was released by her Washington press office; the email included a link to coverage of the executive order: New York Times reporting on the moratorium.
