Our City Action Buffalo (OCAB) is calling on Buffalo Police Commissioner Erika Shields to immediately suspend Deputy Commissioner Craig Macy after video captured Macy shoving a pedestrian to the ground on Chippewa Street on Saturday night, the group said in a July 14, 2026 press release.
Commissioner Shields has described the footage as “concerning” and said the police department is “gathering additional video and information to conduct a thorough review of the incident,” OCAB noted.
OCAB said it considers Macy’s conduct to be “serious, disruptive, and detrimental to the department,” and that Buffalo Police Department policy calls for suspension of any employee facing allegations of that nature. The group said Commissioner Shields should apply the suspension policy equally to deputies and other officers.
In its statement, OCAB also urged city government to work with nightlife venues and local anti-violence groups to create violence-prevention plans, and called on lawmakers to consider alternative approaches to public safety that address root causes of crime. OCAB described the recurring fights on Chippewa Street on Saturday nights as evidence that heavy police presence has not produced safety.
The statement identifies OCAB as a 501(c)(4) organization that organizes around systemic inequities through community organizing, public policy work, civic engagement and narrative change.
